Hook up 4 way switch
Now don't let this be confused with where the switches are way switch located in your home.
The white neutral wires are connected together in each switch box. Now this one gets a way switch tricky by keeping track of what switch you toggle in your mind, just hang in there.
A dimmer can be added in this way to any of the circuits on this page. Travelers can be wired in either of these examples on 3- way and 4- way switches.
Source at First Switch
Keep in mind that the 4-way switches must always be between the 2 3-way switches. A 4-way dimmer diagram is included as well as an arrangement to control the lights from four different points.
Conventional 4- Way Light Switch Diagrams. In the diagram below, a 2- wire NM cable supplies power from the panel to the first switch box.
Conventional 4- Way Switch Wiring 4- way switches have four terminals each with two pairs of travelers one set usually black and one set usually brass color. Now lets look at it from a flow point of view: Three-wire cable runs between all switches and 2-wire cable runs from the last switch to the light fixture.
The first switch 3- way travelers brass color connect to one pair of the second switch 4- way travelers black or brass color. A four switch configuration will have two 3- way switches, polyamory dating site canada on each end and two 4- way switches in the middle.
At the 4-way, the hot wire from the common terminal on SW2 is splice through to the hot on the light fixture. Wiring for Ceiling Fans.
Source at First Switch In this basic 4 way light circuit the source is at the first switch and the hot connects to the common on that switch. In the diagrams below, the first switch 3- way common terminal connects to volts.
Ceiling Fan Switch Wiring. To make it work, you just have to place all the 4-ways between the two 3-way switches in the circuit. A 4 way switch must be wired between two 3 ways as shown in the diagrams on this page.
Source at the Light
Alternate 4- Way Switch Wiring. If you want more than three locations to hook the lights, you will need a 4-way switch for each of those extra locations. Three-wire cable runs between all the switches and the traveler wires are connected between the two 3-ways and the 4-way.
The stranded wires on the dimmer are spliced to the cable wires from the circuit. Here the source is at SW1 and the light fixture comes immediately after. The travelers from SW1 run to T1 on the 4 way switch and from T2 to the traveler wires on the dimmer.
Place each 4-way switch, one after another, between the 3-ways. The source is at SW1 and the hot wire is connected to the common terminal.
Wiring a 4-way Switch
As you can see, this is basically a 3-way circuit with a 4-way switch added between the 2 3-way switches.
Go to my Switch Terminology Page where I discuss the terms used for the different types of home electrical switches. Check to be sure the traveler wires only connect between the traveler terminals on the switches. A 4 way has five connections: Connect all ground wires to grounding terminals on all boxes and devices.
Placement of the switches is the key to making these circuits work.
Unfortunately, not all 3- way switches are wired the conventional way.
